“To The Islands”, An Australian Text Classic.

One of Tim Winton’s early influential authors.
I first read “To The Islands” by Stow in 1975
after Mr Marshall, my 6th grade teacher,
Recommended his works.
I loved it.
Strange, sad, moving, unusual, poignant,
Heart warming and uniquely Australian.
It helped me understand another perspective of
Stories my father shared of this part of Australia,
A remote area where dad also spent a lot of time
working from the 1940’s to the 1970’s.
Remote northern WA, indigenous people and
The beautiful connection to country they
 shared in unspoilt nature.
Bayden Marshall, my teacher
had also spent decades living and working
In remote rural schools in these regions.
I feel so blessed to have had these
Foundational stories, both via word of mouth
From dad and Bayden
And shared in print like Stow’s novels,
Thank you wise elders.
