Why we need new socialist parties across Australia
Politics today is rigged for big corporations and the super rich. No matter who has been in power in recent decades, the billionaire class has seen its wealth soar while increasing numbers struggle just to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.
Labor won the recent federal election in a landslide. They have a clear mandate to pursue policies that will benefit working-class people (the people who, historically, Labor has claimed to represent). Yet their most important policy decision since being re-elected has been to approve the extension of Woodside's gas mining lease off the coast of Western Australia until 2070 - a gift to the fossil fuel industry that will, by further fuelling climate change, undermine the future livelihoods and security of ordinary people here and around the world.
Every sign is that Labor will continue to deliver for big business and the rich rather than doing anything substantial to improve the lives of workers. We've seen how, in many countries, the failure of centre-left parties to deliver real change has fuelled the rise of the far right. And that's another big reason why the expansion of our movement is so urgent.
We want to ensure everyone, no matter which state or territory they live in, has the option of voting for a socialist party that will fight to deliver the radical change we need from the destructive status quo of capitalism today. And we're confident that, just like in Victoria, where we can run a decent campaign we'll get a good response.
